Here at Blacklight headquarters, we value our player community, and all the effort you put into not only playing our game, but growing our community and reaching out to other players. In honor of you, our agents, we are proud to bring you a new Player Spotlight. This week, we introduce you to a fellow agent, Derps!.
We hope you enjoy this little trip into the mind of one of our players, and keep your heads up, the next player spotlight may shine on you!
How long have you played Blacklight?
I first started when it went to open beta, stopped for a while due to busy life, then started again full bore during the Steam release. (I forget my original account name, lol)
What’s your favorite weapon/why?
Does it have to be a receiver? Because it would be Shock Grenade. So very versatile, direct hits kill, indirect hits incapacitate. So very nice!
What’s your favorite game mode/why?
CTF. I have always loved the classic Capture the Flag since playing it as a kid in real life (paintball ctf anyone?). In FPS games I enjoy it due to its linear objectivity, but still requiring a semblance of teamwork to pull off decisive wins. Not super complicated, but just interesting enough so that flat out killing ability isn’t always the deciding factor.
What’s your favorite map/why?
Deadlock. Probably not the most balanced map, but I just love the atmosphere of it. Fits the whole post apocalyptic, human survival story setting so well! Mixing the idea of Asian culture blending heavily into a rustic almost cyber punk feel in the shanty town. The designer put in a lot of detail and design work into this map; it really shows! Everyone should take the time to just site-see on that map!
What games do you play when you’re NOT owning in Blacklight?
Well if I am not catching up on my massive backlog list of games on Steam, my latest go-to games have been Borderlands 2, Neverwinter, Hawken and most recently Battefield 4.
When future humans uncover videos of the ancient Blacklight: Retribution, the religion that apparently spanned the globe, what will you be best known for?
Probably my community involvement with “hacker busting” ala Blacklist. The genius who started it, Krackle, invited my humble self to help out back when and ever since it has become a huge part of my game life in Blacklight. The future BLR religion I would hope retains a loving place for the BLR Blacklist. (Maybe to a lesser extent my off & on streaming for BCL, but huge credit remains in FWD’s hands!)
The BLR Blacklist has been an invaluable resource for our Community. What was your motivation for joining the Blacklist Team as a staff member?
Initially, I was skeptical. I felt like it would be too subjective of a community policing method. But after chatting with Krackle, I realized how pure the intentions were in their efforts to be as objective as anyone can really try to be. The checks & balances come from pretty much all Blacklist efforts being transparent and staff members often double checking each other’s actions. This was enough to convince me. Although human error can sometimes be a factor, the intentions are true! Helping keep the Blacklight gameplay experience devoid of malicious cheaters!
How do you feel the Blacklist has helped in keeping the streets of BLR clean?
First of all, the contributors. This is the #1 factor in helping keep BLR clean. People who contribute hacker proofs are the ones that help staff weed out the bad apples in the game. Even if evidence is turned down, badly/incorrectly spotted, or simply not usable, the contribution efforts are ALWAYS hugely appreciated! Secondly, the more publicity it gets the better it acts as a ward against hackers. The hope is that the more effective Blacklist is, the more cheaters will think twice about cheating in BLR!
What are some things that you would like to impart to players who may have questions about the BLR Blacklist, since it is a bit of a touchy subject?
I would basically just emphasis that it is a system largely successful due to the contributors and this means that sometimes things ARE subjective. Staff will often convene on the more controversial matters to try and reach a decision, but since we are all human, even staff can make mistakes so please try to be understanding (take Blacklist with a grain of salt, staff are fairly adept at hacker behavior spotting, but are still human!). Additionally, remember that Blacklist is NOT affiliated directly with PWE. So expecting staff to have access beyond any other contributor is incorrect.
What are some tips you’d like to impart to the players who suspect that they may have found a hacker?
If any player wishes to start contributing to the hacker busting initiative of Blacklist EVEN if you believe yourself to be a well informed player, please read this rough guide for hacker spotting: http://www.blrblacklist.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=257 It covers overall guidelines to help with the more obvious cases. This guide continues to grow as we learn more and more subtle behaviors to watch for, so check in every so often for updates! That said; please also remember to not be too hasty with your accusations. Spend some time observing or re-watching your recordings to be positive that they fit the suspicion criteria. And lastly, *ADD TIME STAMPS*! This is insanely helpful especially in the less obvious cases to help staff and the public cross reference the material. Thanks!
Give us a few tips that you can share with some of our newer players who may not be as experienced as some of the more seasoned Veterans.
HRV. HRV. HRV. By this I do not mean sit in HRV for the full duration. I mean spam it in short durations as much as possible. Learn to always be aware of your surroundings by a quick flick of HRV usage, 180/360 degree scans and while behind cover just in case. Listen for footsteps before using, as well as be aware of teammates to cover you before using so you do not get caught with your pants down! Lastly, persistence! This FPS game has a bit of a different feel than all the mainstream ones, so it takes a little while to get used to. Do not expect to be good at this game the first time you play.
Ok, Now for the tough question… Star Trek or Star Wars?
"Trek Wars" I grew up with both through my nerdy parents. Watched Piccard on Next Generation forever (parents are somewhat "trekkies/trekkers" whatever), and dad got me hooked on Star Wars. Fun Fact: Star Wars ep6 released the day I was born!
Thanks for reading up on our latest Player Spotlight, join us next week for more, and watch out in game for your chance to become our next Spotlight Player!
